Network Modeling and Jitter Control for Multimedia Communication over Broadband Network

Due to the isochronous nature of multimedia data streams, they require special handling by the underlying data network to provide guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS). For pre-orchestrated multimedia documents, the important QOS parameters are bandwidth, jitter and reliability. A data network may employ a large number of service disciplines that provide guaranteed QoS, such as PGPS, SCFQ, VC, WF 2 Q. In this paper, we propose a network model, which we call the Jitter Graph, to capture the bandwidth, jitter and reliability of a large number of service disciplines. The model also captures the relation between these QoS parameters and the allocated resources, such as bandwidth and buuer. The signiicance of this model is that it abstracts the properties of the network, which allows the design of QoS routing protocols, resource allocation policies, and traac regulation schemes that are independent of the speciic properties of each node. Based on this model, we propose a traac regulation scheme, which we call the Initial Delay Regulator (IDR), which reduces, and possibly eliminates, jitter introduced by any service discipline that can be abstracted by the jitter graph network model. We then present and analyze some of the existing service disciplines to determine the parameters of the jitter graph model and to show the generality of the network model and the proposed jitter control regulator. In the end, we simulate some the existing service disciplines to show the eeectiveness of IDR in reducing jitter while operating in conjunction with diierent service disciplines.
